Ah, Birmingham, birthplace of Neville Chamberlain, Jasper Carrott and, erm, Rickey Smiley?! Hang on, I think I’ve just confused myself, we’re talking about Birmingham, England not Birmingham, Alabama. It’s an easy mistake to make isn’t it? As I was driving through the city (the West Midlands one, just to avoid confusion) I was astounded to hear that the city council had made this very same error on a leaflet. I couldn’t believe it, I wouldn’t believe it! Surely these council members – people of undoubted intelligence – would not allow such a mistake to occur. So I continued on to work putting my mind to what monotonous tasks I would be set that day.

As I pulled the car into my drive that evening all thoughts of the leaflet had left my mind. That is, until I opened my front door and saw it on the mat. Picking it up, I had a quick flick through; recycling theme so wasn’t too interested. It’s only when I was about to throw it away (green bin of course) that I saw it; a skyline of Birmingham – but not the Birmingham I knew. I was shocked to say the least; I’d not expected this to be true. Fortunately, I was able to see the funny side of it. But it did make me think, what if I’d not decided to glance at the picture – I would not have enjoyed such merriment. Thank goodness for the radio broadcast that I heard it in the car – I would never have known otherwise!

Eating in Birmingham

If you are heading in to Birmingham by plane, then you may be looking for somewhere nice to eat. There are places to eat at the airport but chances are that you would like something in the hub of this exciting city which is a little more sophisticated. If this is the case, then why not grab a hire car and drive to The Mailbox. This is a fairly new and very stylish shopping centre and there is a fantastic restaurant called Crystal Rivers. It is not too expensive with the average meal costing about £25. The atmosphere is good and it has the feels of a smart London restaurant.

Some people think it is a little pricey but it depends what you want, some people want cheap food and big portions and others want better quality in smaller amounts. Check out their website before you book and then you can decide whether you think you will like it. They have a good reputation for the cocktails they make. The menu is varied and Mediterranean in style. There are a choice of pizza, pasta, meat, fish, risotto, salads and many other things. There is also a very tasty looking dessert menu. All food is prepared which means that you may have to wait sometime if they are busy but if you want to relax and enjoy their cocktails then this should not be a problem. It also means you will get well cooked and tasty food which should be worth the wait.
