Whether you find yourself in Birmingham for business or pleasure, one thing is for certain: there is never a shortage of things to do. If you feel like being a cultural tourist, check out one of Birmingham’s many museums. With a rental car, they are all very easily within reach; the question really is which one do you go to?
One of the most highly rated museums in Birmingham is the City Museum and Art Gallery. Incredibly, the city museum is over 120 years old! It was first opened up in 1885 by the Prince of Wales and to this day is considered one of the greatest museums outside of London. The museum and art gallery shows off pieces from the 16th to 19th centuries, and features works from Oliver Cromwell, David Cos, and James Tower. The art ranges from classic to modern, and is a fine collection of many different artists. You can find the Birmingham City Museum located at Chamberlain Square.
Another great one is the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. The Barber Institute focuses on works from the 18th to 20th centuries, and features artists like Monet, Rembrandt, and Bellini, just to name a few. The gallery is located at the Barber Institute.
Birmingham is also host to a massive Central Library, with one of the largest collections of Shakespearean works outside of the United States. Here you can find a whopping 50,000 volumes of Shakespeare in as many as 90 different languages. Be sure to check out the coin and stamp collection, as they are also quite outstanding. It’s a great place for tourists and citizens alike. The Central Library is located at 3 In the Library.
The great part about having a rental car in a strange unfamiliar city like Birmingham is it really expands your options. You are no longer limited to the areas directly surrounding your hotel; instead, you can travel to great museums like the City Museum or the galleries at the Barber Institute. It’s all there, just waiting for you to find it.
