Birmingham Airport Maintains Excellent Track-Keeping Performance

Filed under: Birmingham Airport - 09 May 2013  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Birmingham Airport is renowned for its excellent track-keeping performance, which the airport has managed to maintain in 2012. Airport officials say that 99% of all departing aircraft stayed “on track” in 2012, beating the annual target of 95%.

The airport has invested significantly in monitoring aircraft track-keeping and holds regular meetings with airlines, air traffic managers and operational staff to ensure that they are aware of its noise and track-keeping policies.

Consequently, the airport has increased the number of aircraft staying within noise preferential routes, which airlines are obliged to stay within to avoid flying over the most densely populated residential areas until they reach an altitude of 914 m (3,000 ft).

Moreover, the “Operation Pathfinder” scheme was set up seven years ago by the airport and the Conservative MP for Meriden,Caroline Spelman, to recognize airlines performing well and exceeding the airport’s track-keeping target.

This year, at the ceremony that was held in April, Turkish Airlines won the best track-keeping award in the over 50 flights per month category with a 100% on-track record. Other airlines honored included Aer Lingus, Eastern Airways, Flybe, Monarch, Thomas Cook, and Thomson.

Paul Kehoe, CEO at Birmingham Airport, said: “I’d like to congratulate the airlines for their hard work and commitment to the scheme, which has helped us to achieve another fantastic set of results. We have recently been out on the road visiting our local communities, speaking to residents about future changes to our flight paths through a series of public consultations”.

We are aware that some residents are concerned about aircraft noise and track-keeping, which is why we hold regular meetings and briefings to encourage local people to come and talk to us about any issues they may have about the airport, so that we can reduce any impact”, added Kehoe.

Not long after the good news, Birmingham Airport’s new air traffic control tower has been crowned Project of the Year at the 2013 RICS West Midlands Awards. At the ceremony, which celebrates the most inspirational initiatives in the region’s land, property and construction sectors, the tower also picked up the prize for Best Regeneration Scheme.

On receiving the award, Will Heynes, Airport’s Development Director, said: “We’re honored to have won these two awards. The new ATC tower is a significant and vital investment that supports our vision to provide the Midlands with global connectivity, and a facility where airlines choose to operate and passengers prefer to fly from”.

The seven story tower, standing at 34m, is one of the tallest un-stayed control towers in the UK. Opened in the last few days, it’s equipped with state of the art radar and navigation equipment, and gives controllers better views of the airfield, including the extension of the runways.
